Find a drug in
your own backyard!

Students can demonstrate the presence of antibiotics in common yard plants or plant-derived kitchen products and follow in the footsteps of Alexander Fleming. This protocol utilizes basic techniques of microbiology, yet demonstrates real-world issues in the realm of drug discovery. It requires that the teacher have the ability to prepare (or purchase) bacterial growth agar plates and dispose of bacterial waste.

Suitable for 6th grade students to adults.
