DNA From Fruit Smoothies

smoothie ingredients

Instructor will prepare a smoothie for you utilizing four ingredients:

  • Frozen strawberries
  • Banana
  • Honey
  • Orange juice

You will be provided with a small cup of smoothie, one 50ml conical tube, and one microfuge tube containing approximately 1 ml of liquid dish soap.

Students

  1. Pour an aliquot of approximately 5ml of fruit smoothie into 50ml conical tube. You may drink the rest!

pour into tube

  1. Add all of your liquid soap to your tube of smoothie, and mix gently (do NOT shake - try not to create foam/bubbles) for about 3 minutes.

student adding

  1. Open your tube. The instructor will come around the room and SLOWLY pour an equal volume of 95% alcohol down the side of the tube so that it forms a layer on top of the fruit smoothie/detergent mixture. Do NOT mix the two layers at this point.

tube

  1. Recap your tube and observe the gradual appearance of DNA at the interface of the two layers. Your instructor may give you the opportunity to try to collect the DNA.
