Street meters are located throughout the central area. Watch for signs designating loading/unloading areas or tow-away zones during rush hours.
CAUTION:
Metered parking on Johnson Street is available from 9:00 am. - 3:00 pm.
After 3:00 pm, cars will be ticketed and towed.
Do not park along Johnson Street between 7:00 - 9:00 am and 3:00 - 5:30 pm weekdays!
Generally vehicles are towed around the corner to Wisconsin Avenue; call 266-4260 or non-emergency number of the Police Department for location of towed vehicles. Report any malfunctioning meters by calling 266-4761; make sure you have your meter number and license plate number.
Private Parking
There are limited private parking options in the Downtown area. For instance, there are several vertical parking structures nearby. The price for monthly parking could be a bargain if shared by a carpool.
Free 2 hour Parking
There is free two-hour parking on the streets east of the Downtown Education Center, north of Johnson Street; watch for the signs. $20 tickets are issued for parking over time limit.
Bicycling
Madison has an extensive system of bike routes, including designated sidewalks, streets, bike/bus-only lanes, and separated bike paths. Bikeway maps are available from the Madison Transportation Agency. The City of Madison requires bicycles to be registered, which may be done at any city fire station, at the City Treasurer's office or online at www.madisonpay.com. Bicycle racks are available on the Johnson Street, Wisconsin Avenue and Dayton Street sides of the building.
NOTE: Bicycles are NOT allowed inside the Downtown Education Center.
Rideshare
Sharing the ride to work or school can be an inexpensive, energy efficient, and an ecological alternative to driving alone. Vanpools provide an economical means of transportation for persons commuting over 20 miles to Madison. Carpool name matching services are available through the Dane County Ridesharing Coordinator and State of Wisconsin Trans Plan Coordinator. Local newspapers publish free ads for persons wishing to form carpools. For more information on vanpools or carpools, call 266-RIDE (7233), or consult the City of Madison website www.cityofmadison.com/rideshare.
