Constitution
Article I. Name
SECTION 1. This organization shall be known as the Student Senate of the Madison Area Technical College, representing all students enrolled for credit in post-high school divisions at Madison-Truax, Madison-Commercial Avenue, and Madison Downtown Education Center.
Article II. Purpose
SECTION 1. This organization shall serve as a coordinating unit for students within this college for the purpose of:
A. Representing students' voice in their Student Senate.
B. Providing a liaison between the administration and the students.
C. Promoting citizenship and leadership within the student body.
D. Encouraging improvement of the college.
E. Acquiring and disseminating accurate information to the student body.
F. Communicating accurate information to the student body concerning the promotion of vocational and adult education within the community.
Article III. Government
SECTION 1. The officers of the Student Senate will consist of a President, Vice-President (Truax), Vice-President (Downtown), Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and Secretary, and Legistative Coordinator.
SECTION 2. The meetings of the Senate shall be conducted by an Executive Council as provided by the Bylaws.
SECTION 3. Chairpersons of committees which are deemed necessary to carry on the work of this organization will be appointed by the President and approved by the Executive Council.
SECTION 4. The established parliamentary procedures of Robert's Rules of Order for officers and committees shall guide those responsible in carrying out their duties.
Article IV. Amendments
SECTION 1. Any active member may propose an amendment to the Constitution. Proposed amendments must be supported by a quorum of active members and submitted to the Parliamentarian. The Parliamentarian shall present all such bills to the Student Senate for action. When acted upon by the Student Senate and approved by an affirmative quorum vote, the amendments shall be then submitted by the President of the Senate to the President of the college for approval.
SECTION 2. Adoption of such amendments shall be constituted after:
A. Amendments to the Constitution that have been presented in the form of a petition signed by 10 percent of students enrolled for credit.
B. An affirmative approval has been given by the Senate President.
C. An announcement has been made to the Student Senate regarding the acceptance or rejection of such amendment by the President of the college.
